American Public Knows Little About Brain Injury

An op-ed published by the New York Times draws attention to the fact that people do not know a lot about traumatic brain injury. Until the recent death of actress Natasha Richardson, many people had not realized the devastating effects a brain injury can have upon a person. According to the article, sports facilities where people could have a higher risk for brain injuries do little to educate staff about how to respond to brain injuries. Brain Injury Survivors to Attend 3rd Annual Carnival of Care

The 3RD annual Carnival of Care, hosted by Brain Injury Association of Michigan, is scheduled for this Saturday. This festival is located at St. John’s Armenian Church in Detroit and is free to all those who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury and their caregivers. The association estimates that nearly 1.4 million Americans suffer Traumatic Brain Injuries annual, which is the leading cause of disability in this country. High Chair Recall

The Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of nearly 24,000 Fischer Price high chairs on Tuesday as they’ve been identified as at risk for children falling and suffering brain injuries. The chair in question is the Fischer Price 3 in 1 chair which also can be turned into a booster. This chair which is at risk for causing brain injuries was sold at exclusively in Target stores over the past year and retailed at nearly $100. Received a Head Injury…Go to the ER?

Stemming from the recent attention talk and die brain injuries have received in light of actress Natasha Richardson’s tragic death, below are some recommendations to consider after someone suffers a head injury. Keep a watchful eye over the victim. Brain injury symptoms can manifest themselves quickly and any change in condition could warrant medical attention. Brain Injured Boxer Seeks to Fight Again

Edwin Valero, a Venezuelan lightweight/junior welterweight/welterweight fighter with a record of 24-0, is having trouble getting cleared to fight in the US due to an old brain injury. In 2004, during an pre-fight examination in New York, the fighter was unable to get a license due to this brain injury. To date, the only US jurisdiction which has licensed Valero is TX. Air Force Opens Brain Injury Clinic

The US Air Force has opened a brain injury clinic on Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, Alaska. The Department of Defense is estimating that nearly 20% of those who have and will serve in Iraq and Afghanistan will suffer some form of traumatic brain injury. Traumatic Brain Injury Unlocks Veteran’s Creative Side

Melissa Hooppaw, a veteran of the current Iraq war, suffered a mild traumatic brain injury in 2004. Two years and one deployment later, residual effects of the injury left the veteran unable to hold a job. Despite her Brain injury, armed with time on her hands and nothing more than a high school art background, Melissa began making crafts out of old furniture and selling them on the side. Actress’s Tragic Death Brings Awareness to Brain Injuries

Actress Natasha Richardson died yesterday of a traumatic brain injury suffered while skiing in Canada earlier this week. Natasha’s injury is bringing to light a type of brain injury known as epidural hemorrhaging, or talk and die syndrome. Characteristics of this type of brain injury make it hard to diagnose as the victim usually seems symptomless for up to several days before the condition of the victim begins to decline rapidly. Do Taser’s Cause Brain Injuries?

A Canadian study set to be released this week states that Taser Guns can cause injury to the brain, including seizures. The study notes that many police forces use taser guns as a means of nonlethal force. The study was prompted by the collapse and subsequent suffering of a mild traumatic brain injury by a police officer mistaken “shot” by a taser gun. Boy Recovering From Freak Accident

A 7 year old boy suffered a traumatic brain injury when the icicle he was standing under (catching water drops in his mouth) fell and struck him in the head. The boy is learning to walk again after suffering two skull fractures and brain damage. The boy is out of school for the rest of the year, but IS expected to make a full recovery.
