Brain Injury may have led to Death Years Later

An attack, causing a brain injury, may have killed a person 8 years later. Two 18 year olds got into a fight and one of the individuals hit the other with a baseball bat causing a serious brain injury; 8 years later he died and the doctors are trying to determine whether the brain injury was the cause of death. Softball Collision Causes Brain Injury

Two players collided in a softball game that took place on June 18, causing one player a serious brain injury. The brain injury the player suffered led to his death only two days later. Golf Cart Accident Causes Serious Brain Injury

A 43 year old woman fell off a golf cart last week and it caused a serious brain injury. The woman had been drinking and standing on the cart, when the cart hit a city street, she fell and landed on her head causing the brain injury. The leading cause of brain injuries are falls. Treatment to Reduce Brain Injury Damage

Doctors believe that there may be a drug that can reduce the effects of brain injuries. Hormone progesterone, used to be a way to reduce damage to stroke victims. The drug is now being tested in 17 hospitals to see how it can help reduce brain injuries. It is believed that if given to patients within hours of the accident, the drug can lower death rates, reduce paralysis and cognitive damage. Punch in the Face Leads to a Brain Injury

A young college student was in Texas visiting a friend at Southern Methodist University last weekend, when he was atttacked casuing a brain injury. As he left a concert that he attended with his friends, he was sucker-punched in the head causing a brain injury. The punch went straight to his head and the man hit the ground, slamming his head into the concrete causing a brain injury. The man’s brain injury is currently bleeding and swelling, which has led to the man being placed in a medically induced coma. The Sarah Jane Brain Project Works with Hospitals Around the Country to Help Prevent Brain Injuries

60 of the top medical professionals in America came together to draft the first ever National Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury Plan (PABI). PABI is working with the Sarah Jane Brain Project to help prevent and inform individual about children with Brain Injuries. President of the North American Brain Injury Society, Dr. Savage said that brain injuries are the largest killer and disabler of children and young adults; over one million children and young adults suffer brain injuries each year. Child with Brain Injury in Critical Condition

A man caused a two month old child to suffer a brain injury when he shook the child with his hands. The man is being charged with felony abuse for the brain injury he caused. The baby became unresponsive and was taken to Lexington Medical Center. The doctor said the baby suffered multiple injuries, including a serious brain injury. Brain Injury Association Urges Obama to Include Cognitive Rehabilitation for Returning Soldiers

According to Anthem Insurance Companies Inc., cognitive rehabilitation is a medically necessary treatment for those patients with traumatic brain injuries. Over 20% of injured American soldiers are now experiencing traumatic Brain Injuries and need to be treated for those injuries. The Brain Injury Association , the voice of those with brain injuries , is asking for President Obama to come through with a promise he made as Senator and direct Secretary Gates to enact TRICARE coverage to those who need cognitive rehabilitation from a brain injury that they suffered while serving overseas. Deep Brain Stimulation Tested for Treating Traumatic Brain Injuries

At Weill-Cornell Medical Center, a research team tested deep brain stimulation on a man who was minimally conscious for six years due to a brain injury. Prior to the stimulation, his brain damage caused him to not be able to chew and he rarely communicated by using his thumb to set off a device. Doctors performed stimulation on the area of his brain that controls the body’s sleeping and waking. After the treatment, he could chew and swallow, speak in short sentences and move his limbs. Researchers cautioned that in cases of severe brain damage, patients probably would not respond to deep brain stimulation.
