Doctors believe that there may be a drug that can reduce the effects of brain injuries. Hormone progesterone, used to be a way to reduce damage to stroke victims. The drug is now being tested in 17 hospitals to see how it can help reduce brain injuries. It is believed that if given to patients within hours of the accident, the drug can lower death rates, reduce paralysis and cognitive damage. As he left a concert that he attended with his friends, he was sucker-punched in the head causing a brain injury. The man’s brain injury is currently bleeding and swelling, which has led to the man being placed in a medically induced coma. 60 of the top medical professionals in America came together to draft the first ever National Pediatric Acquired Brain Injury Plan (PABI). PABI is working with the Sarah Jane Brain Project to help prevent and inform individual about children with Brain Injuries. President of the North American Brain Injury Society, Dr. Savage said that brain injuries are the largest killer and disabler of children and young adults; over one million children and young adults suffer brain injuries each year. Deep Brain Stimulation Tested for Treating Traumatic Brain Injuries

At Weill-Cornell Medical Center, a research team tested deep brain stimulation on a man who was minimally conscious for six years due to a brain injury. Prior to the stimulation, his brain damage caused him to not be able to chew and he rarely communicated by using his thumb to set off a device. Doctors performed stimulation on the area of his brain that controls the body’s sleeping and waking. After the treatment, he could chew and swallow, speak in short sentences and move his limbs. Researchers cautioned that in cases of severe brain damage, patients probably would not respond to deep brain stimulation. NFL Studies Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

The National Football League is funding a study of mild traumatic brain injury in retired players. The study will measure the long-term effects of head injuries such as concussions and will also try to prevent future injuries by focusing on safety. Study Reveals That the Effects of Brain Injury Linger for Years

A recent university study examined the effects of brain injury in children. The study looked at how long the effects lasted and how they affected children as they grew older. After examining a number of traumatic brain injury studies, researchers found that children with brain injuries fell significantly further behind their peers than originally thought. They also discovered those children with the severe brain injuries had worse recovery outcomes than those with less serious injuries.
